Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: How to Get Into the Answers
Growthclan Team ·
To get into Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, a page first has to be indexed and eligible to appear in classic results; then it has to answer the question, or one of the sub-questions Google explores to build the answer, clearly and reliably. There are no dedicated technical tricks: SEO fundamentals matter, plus content written to be cited.
What is the difference between AI Overviews and AI Mode?
- AI Overviews are the AI-generated box shown at the top of some Google results, with a summary and links to sources.
- AI Mode is a conversational search experience: users ask longer, more detailed questions, often in a row, and get generated answers with links to read more.
Google has explained that AI Mode uses a “query fan-out” technique: it breaks the question into several related searches and combines the results. That means a page can be chosen because it answers part of the question well, not necessarily all of it.
How does Google choose sources?
Google says its AI features rely on its search ranking systems. In practice, cited pages tend to:
- be indexed and technically sound;
- answer directly the question or part of it;
- show real expertise and experience;
- be easy to read: headings that match questions, short paragraphs, data, lists and tables.
What changes compared with ten blue links?
Ranking still matters, but it is not enough. A page in third position with a clear answer can be cited in the AI Overview more than a page in first position that talks around the question. And because AI Mode explores several sub-questions, covering a topic well, with linked pages, helps more than one very long page.
We explain it in detail in GEO vs SEO: what changes and why you need both.
What should you do in practice?
- Start from technical SEO. Indexing, speed, server-side rendering, structured data. If you need help: SEO consulting.
- Write for questions, not keywords. Each section opens with the answer in one or two sentences.
- Cover the sub-questions. Pricing, comparisons, use cases, limits: what a buyer would ask next.
- Keep content current. Visible dates and up-to-date information, especially on pricing and features.
- Measure citations. Search Console doesn’t clearly tell you whether you appear in AI Overviews: you need to monitor the answers, as we do in our GEO service.
What if Google shows wrong information about you?
It happens when the sources Google finds are outdated or contradictory. The fix is upstream: correct the information on your site, your profiles and the most-cited third-party sources, and create a clear page that answers that exact question.

Frequently asked questions
Do AI Overviews need special optimization?
Google says the same search fundamentals apply to its AI features: indexable, helpful, well-made pages. No special files or markup are required; what matters is the quality and clarity of the answers.
Does Google-Extended affect AI Overviews?
Google-Extended controls the use of content for some Google AI products, but Google states that it does not affect inclusion in Search results, AI Overviews included.
How do I see traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Search Console includes this data in web search traffic without fully separating it. To know whether you are cited, you also need to monitor the answers directly.
