GEO vs SEO: what changes and why you need both

SEO gets you found among Google's results; GEO gets you named and cited in AI answers. You need both: AI engines often start from pages that rank well, but they decide who to name by their own criteria, so ranking first on Google does not guarantee you appear in ChatGPT's or Perplexity's answer.

How do GEO and SEO work together?

They are not two separate projects: they share foundations and reinforce each other.

Shared technical foundations

Fast, crawlable pages that read without JavaScript serve both Google and AI crawlers. GEO adds specific checks: AI-crawler access, llms.txt, structured data.

Content that ranks and gets cited

A page can be comprehensive for SEO and, at the same time, open each section with a direct answer an AI can quote.

Digital PR that counts twice

Mentions in publications, comparisons and rankings build authority for Google and are often the very sources AI engines cite.

One plan, two sets of metrics

Traffic and rankings for SEO; mentions, share of voice and cited sources for GEO. Read together, they tell you where to invest.

Which questions does a Google ranking not cover?

The ones where a buyer asks for a recommendation, a comparison or a list: the AI answers with a few names taken from sources other than your page.

  • “What is the best ERP for a small manufacturing company?”

The answer lists 3–5 names taken from comparisons and reviews. Ranking first on Google with your product page does not put you on the list.

  • “Can you recommend a legal translation firm in Milan?”

For local services, AI engines pick a few names by cross-checking listings, reviews and mentions: consistent information everywhere matters.

  • “Is [product A] or [product B] better for a 20-person team?”

In comparisons, AI engines summarise pros and cons from third-party sources. If those sources don't mention you, the comparison happens without you.

  • “How much does [service] usually cost in Italy?”

AI engines answer with figures taken from other pages, sometimes wrong. Without a clear, quotable page of your own, others tell your price.

  • “Which [category] brands ship to Germany?”

Abroad, AI engines use different sources and languages: your visibility in Italy does not carry over on its own.

GEO vs SEO FAQ

Does GEO replace SEO?

+

No. SEO is still the foundation: many AI engines search the web and start from the pages they can find best. GEO adds the work needed to be chosen, named and cited in the answer.

If I rank first on Google, will AI engines cite me?

+

Not necessarily. A good ranking helps, but AI engines also decide who to name based on how quotable the page is, what third-party sources say about you and how consistent your brand information is.

Can I do GEO without SEO?

+

You can, but it pays off less: if the site is hard to crawl or the content is thin, AI engines have little to cite. It is worth working on the shared foundations together.

How do I measure the results of both?

+

SEO with Search Console and analytics; GEO with daily tracking of AI answers: mention rate, share of voice, average position and cited sources.
