How does ChatGPT choose its sources?

With search on, ChatGPT queries a search system, reads a few pages and builds the answer while citing them. OpenAI has said it also uses third-party search providers, so visibility in search engines, Bing included, affects the result.

Without search, the answer relies on what the model learned in training: what matters is how much, and how consistently, the web talks about your brand.
