AI Share of Voice: What It Is and How to Measure It
Growthclan Team ·
AI share of voice is the percentage of mentions that go to your brand when AI engines answer the questions in your market. If 25 out of 100 brand mentions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini answers are yours, your share of voice is 25%. It is the number that tells you whether you are winning or losing the AI conversation against your competitors.
Why do we need a new metric?
In classic search, position and clicks matter. In AI answers there is often no click: there is a text that names a few brands. Whoever is named makes the shortlist, whoever isn’t stays out, and no traffic report records it.
Share of voice measures exactly that: how much space you take in the answers, compared with the brands competing for the same customers.
How is it calculated?
The method is simple, but it needs discipline:
- Choose the questions. The ones your buyers really ask, by profile and buying stage. See which questions to track.
- Choose the competitors. The brands customers compare you with, plus those AI engines name often.
- Ask the AI engines, in the country and language of the market, on a regular schedule.
- Count the mentions of every brand in every answer.
- Divide your mentions by the total mentions of all tracked brands.
You can read the result by engine (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Google AI Mode, AI Overview), by question, by country or by buyer profile.
Which other metrics should you read it with?
On its own, share of voice can mislead. At Growthclan we read it together with:
- Mention rate: in how many answers you appear out of the total.
- Average position: whether you appear first or at the bottom of the list.
- Tone: whether you are described positively, neutrally or critically.
- Cited sources: which pages the AI took its information from.
- Visibility score 0–100: an index that sums it all up to compare periods and markets.
A high share of voice with a negative tone, for example, is not good news.
What should you do when share of voice is low?
Look at the cited sources in the answers where competitors win. A few recurring sites usually emerge: comparison articles, rankings, reviews, trade publications. Those are your citation opportunities. Working on those sources, and on your own pages that answer the same questions better, is the most direct way to move your share of voice.
How often should it be measured?
AI answers change often, even when nothing changes on your site. A one-off measurement is a snapshot; a daily one shows the trend and lets you spot a drop immediately. That is why tracking in our GEO service runs daily, with alerts when visibility changes.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mention rate and share of voice?
Mention rate tells you in how many answers you appear out of the total. Share of voice tells you what part of all mentions, yours and your competitors', is yours. You can have a high mention rate but a low share of voice if competitors are named even more often.
How many questions do I need for a reliable measure?
Enough to cover the main buying situations in your market. More important than the number is repeating the same questions over time, on the same engines and in the same country, so comparisons make sense.
Can I see AI share of voice in Google Analytics?
No. Analytics only shows visits that come from AI engines. Share of voice is measured on the answers themselves, by asking AI engines the questions and recording who gets named.
